16931   Andania                           Passenger List

Tourist third cabin list for her June 27, 1925, crossing from New York to Plymouth, Cherbourg, and Hamburg.  A very unusual itinerary for Cunard.  The nascent German merchant fleet has not yet recovered enough from WWI to impede British service at their ports.  In fair condition.  An inch tear on the back cover and some staining.  The front cover is creased.  $12.

21001   Aquitania                           Abstract of Log

Rarely seen post World War II abstract of log dated October 19, 1948.  Captain Grattidge, who would become famous as captain of the Queens and for his book of that name.  Cunard found a new life for Aquitania on emigrant service to Canada.  The Canadian government assured Cunard of making at least £25,000 pounds per round trip.  If Cunard made more, then Cunard kept the extra. If they made less, the government made up the difference.  It's tough to find items from her post-war service.  $22.

21220   Aquitania                           Abstract of Log

Mint condition log card for her voyage from Southampton to New York, dated September 30, 1933.  Irving in command.  $15.

(Please note, we have quantity of these from the 1930's available.  Various dates.)

14388   Aquitania                           Blotter

I love these ink blotters.  Produced as colorful advertising pieces, they were inexpensive yet effective ways of promoting the companies ships.  This striking image of Aquitania most probably dates to the 1920s.  Measures 9½ "x 4½".  $40.

SOLD!

21190   Aquitania                           Brochure

Spectacular entry-into-service brochure for Cunard’s answer to Olympic.  Twenty-four pages with twenty-one renderings and photos of her building.  Views include her on the stocks, the first-class lounge, smoking room, swimming pool, staircase, grill room, some second class interiors, and lots more!  Did you know that the original Cunard fleet could fit on the boat deck of Aquitania?  Includes a printed flyer advertising Aquitania as Britain’s largest liner and announcing her first sailing on May 30, 1914.  Embossed covers.  In excellent condition.  $175.

21005   Aquitania                           Brochure

Printed on glossy paper, which makes the photos quite clear.  32 pages with 54 (!) photos.  Covers first and second class.  All amazing and most not published elsewhere, including such oddities as her motor lifeboat with bamboo wireless mast raised, the upper bridge before it was enclosed, the cabin-class barber shop, the cabin-class verandah café, etc.  Embossed cover with tissue endpapers.  What many consider the best brochure produced for her.  Great condition with some small tears on the edge of the cover.  $250.

“R.M.S. Aquitania – The World’s Wonder Ship.”  This all first-class brochure is eight pages long with eleven photos of her interiors and exterior – some full page.  In excellent condition.  $38.

SOLD!

21219   Aquitania                           Brochure

It’s curious how many early Aquitania brochures have her looking like a bloated Mauretania.  It’s not a bad look for her.  Why they squared off the front of the superstructure is anyone’s guess.  A full-color brochure dating from the immediate post-war era.  Eight fold-out pages for third class.  When was the last time you saw third class in color!?  Six color images, including a double-page painting of Mauretania at speed.  In French.  Excellent condition.  $55.

21187   Aquitania                           Brochure

Fold-out brochure that showcases four-day weekend cruises on Mauretania and Aquitania.  Twelve photo of the interiors and ports.  Dated May, 1932.  During the depths of the depression, Cunard was pretty much begging people to sail!  $25.

21049   Aquitania                           Brochure

One of the better brochures done for Aquitania after the completion of her upgrades, including her new suites.  Runs 24 pages with 23 photos, many full page.  A number of unusual photos, including one of the cold buffet table with a sugar drawing of Aquitania over a Cunard house flag.  The photos are of excellent quality and are very clear.  Dates to circa 1930.  Near mint condition.  $115.

21020   Aquitania                           Brochure

Aquitania spent most of her service life as a transatlantic liner, but in the 1930’s she did some extended cruises.  One of these was to Rio.  Among the ports of call were Nassau, Panama, La Guaira, Trinidad, Bahia, Barbados, Bermuda, and Rio.

The brochure is specially constructed in a way I have never seen before.  With identical reverse covers embossed in gold, one cover in blue and one cover in green.  In a Yin and Yang effect, the blue side is spectacular, clear images of the ship (interior and exterior) and ports; the green side being the itinerary and description of the cruise.  On the green side is also a special pouch containing the shore excursion program with photos and prices.  It’s the best cruise brochure I’ve seen for Aquitania.  Excellent condition.  $75.

SOLD!

21043   Aquitania                           Brochure

“Third Class: How and Why?”  Showcases third class and all the upgrades made to market it.  14 pages with 11 photos.  Dated December 20, 1929.  Very interesting to see how the third-class dining room and lounge on Mauretania were updated.  Cover art is an odd amalgamation of different ships that I like to call the “Berentania.”  Very good condition.  $45.

21109   Aquitania                           Brochure

Fold-out cruise flyer for two of her cruises to the Mediterranean.  Interestingly, these cruises took place after the Cunard White Star merger, but as the brochure was printed in November, 1933, the company is still listed as "Cunard."  Mint condition with a prior owner's name on the front.  $15.

SOLD!

21249    Aquitania                           Deck Plan

Outstanding color-coded plan of cabin accommodations for her as a Cunard White Star liner.  Dated April, 1936.  Fifteen excellent photos.  One of the last deck plans showing the Grill Room before it was removed and converted to tourist-class cabins.  It is fascinating to compare this plan with earlier ones, showing all the extensive modifications and alterations made to her cabin layouts, especially the addition of many, many new private bathrooms.  One of the best deck plans I have ever seen for her.  A bit of passenger scribbling and some arithmetic.  Otherwise in excellent condition.  $115.

SOLD!

21321    Aquitania                           Deck Plan

Great color-coded deck plan specifically printed for her month-long February 17, 1938, cruise to Rio, showing the recently added tourist-class cabins where the former Grill Room was located on D Deck as well as two open-air swimming pools, and the newly added “lido.”  Rates for the cruise are listed as are the senior officers tables in the dining room.  Two small holes at the folds.  When open, measures 41” x 35”.  Fantastic plan.  Because it’s for a cruise, it shows both first and second class although the ship was a single class.  $145.

On board this list is The Prince of Wales (the future Edward VIII), later Duke of Windsor.  As a result of his being on board, the list reads like a Who's Who of 1920's society.  Among the other passengers are Duponts, Mountbattens, Lady Diana Duff Cooper, Her Royal Highness Princesse de Bragance (Duchess of Oporto), future murder victim and tobacco heir Z. Smith Reynolds (and his bother and sisters), to name just a few.

21481    Ivernia                                Plate, souvenir

Ivernia souvenir plate in milk glass.  This plate is in good condition, considering it is now over 100 years old.  It has the typical “pitting” to the applied painting seen on almost all examples of this type of plate, but fortunately, it doesn’t affect the ship much.  Pre-WWI souvenirs for Cunard are getting tough to find.  $95.

12838   Laconia                                Advertising flyer

Advertising flyer for the 1924 World Cruise of the Laconia.  What’s interesting is that the flyer makes mention that the ship is “an oil-burner” with “clean decks” and “no dust or dirt.”  On the back is a complete itinerary including miles between ports.  Near mint.  $10.

23129   Laconia                                Deck Plan

Tissue tourist third plan.  Four photos.  Some very slight holes at the folds.  July, 1930.   Measures about 20" x 30".  $28.

15444R   Lucania                              Post Card

23367    Lusitania                              Deck Plan

One of those items that will set your collection apart from the next guy!  Amazing tissue deck plan for this ill-fated liner, dated March 10, 1909.  Measures about 19" x 14" and includes complete rates by cabin number.

Overall in good condition with some holes at the seams and a few small tears at the edge.  A prospective passenger has also made some notes in pencil about cabins numbers and fares.  A rare opportunity for one of you!  $395.

3600    Lusitania                                Magazine, Current History

Fascinating issue of Current History, dated June, 1915, and published by The New York Times.  Described as “a monthly magazine” about the “European War,” it covers a variety of topics and spends nearly 40 pages discussing various aspects of the sinking of the Lusitania.  Among the Lusitania articles are “American Note to Germany,” “German Embassy’s Warning and the Consequence,” “German Official Report,” “British Coroner’s Verdict,” “German Note of Regret,” “Captain Turner Testifies,” “Lusitania’s First Cabin List,” “Descriptions by Survivors,” “Ernest Cowper’s Account,” “Germany Justifies the Deed,” “German Press Opinion,” “Falaba, Cushing, and Gulflight,” “Aim of German Submarine Warfare,” and much, much more that is Lusitania related.  Magazine is a total of over 200 pages.  In very good condition, but the cover is loose.  Dozens of illustrations, maps, and photos.  $60.

2269    Lusitania                                Magazine, Life

Issue of Life Magazine dated October 13, 1972 with a condensed version of what was then Colin Simpson’s new book about the sinking of the Lusitania.  The article runs 13 pages and has 9 photos.  Very good condition.  $8.

13406   Lusitania                               Magazine, The New York Times Mid-Week Pictorial

The cover proclaims that the magazine has been printed in the new "rotogravure process," which makes the photos amazingly clear for a newspaper of the day.  Dates to May 13, 1915.  Eight photos, including a full-page portrait of Captain Turner on the back cover.  One of the best photos of him you'll see.  Very good condition with typical small tears to edges.  $25.

4658    Lusitania                                Magazine, Sea Classics

Cream-colored flyer of the Lord Mayor of Liverpool’s interim report for the Lusitania Relief Fund, showing how much was raised in each city (including a £1,000 donation by Cunard), etc.  Very interesting document.  $55.

4998    Lusitania                                 Salvaged Spoon

May 7, 1915.  The great Cunard liner Lusitania is struck by a single torpedo off the Old Head of Kinsale, Ireland.  She sinks in a mere 18 minutes with a loss of about 1,200 lives.

In 1982, a salvage firm conducted operations on the wreck to retrieve any items of value they could find.  Among the hundreds of artifacts recovered was this spoon.  On September 15, 1982, it was discovered in the Specie Room on Orlop Deck after the salvagers cut into the hull to recover valuables.

Although more than twenty years have passed since the recovery of the artifacts, very few of the salvaged items have ever been offered for public sale.  Most are in museums or a few private collections around the world.  Here’s your chance to belong to that tiny number of ocean liner collectors who own an item that sank with the Lusitania that day.

These spoons were struck as a war premium (similar to war bonds of World War II), the proceeds from their sale going to aid the British war effort.  A portrait of Britain’s Lord Kitchener is on the handle, and despite its years on the sea floor, this spoon is in remarkable condition.  It measures 6” from handle to bowl.

Please note that only one (1) uncleaned spoon is being offered.  Among the additional photos is one that shows an identical spoon as it looked after it had  been cleaned.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to own something that sank with the ship.  As far as can be determined, this is only the second time a spoon like this has been offered for public sale!  $850
