Deck Chair With Francis Gibbs's desire to build a
fire-proof ship, the massive teak deck chairs of an earlier era were
dispensed with and in their place appeared these iconic red nylon-webbed
aluminum deck chairs, which emphasized the new liner's high-tech,
fireproof, and light-weight construction practices.
Many of the deck chairs
one sees from the United States have either badly faded webbing or cracked/broken arm rests
-- or both. These chairs, however, are in very good condition with
only some slight pocking of the
aluminum (could probably be polished out) and some very, very slight fraying
to the nylon webbing at some edges. Two of the webs on one of the deck chairs
were replaced many years ago when the ship was in service and are of a
brighter red.
I acquired these two deck chairs for my
personal collection about ten years ago and have finally decided to part
with them. Two available @ $750 each. (Blanket and headrest are being
sold separately.)

20252 United States
Sculpture As befitted the flag
ship of America's merchant marine, the decoration aboard the United States
was very patriotic. Among the examples, was a series of 50 medallions
by Gwen Lux, each medallion representing a state of the union. The
trend in decoration on board the United States was very "futuristic," and as
such, lots of cutting-edge materials were used. These medallions are
made of a type of styrofoam and weigh a mere 3.5 ounces each. That
means that all 50 plaques weighed less than 11 pounds!
Measures 6½" x 1¼". There are a few
nicks out of the rim, but overall in great shape. All the medallions
I've ever seen have this flaw. In fact, we're lucky these survive at all
considering the delicate material they're made from. A number were
broken while being removed after the auction. Identical plaques can be
seen at the Windmill Point Restaurant in Nags Head, NC. See the second photo
at left.
Talk about a one-of-a-kind item! Here's a
rare chance to own a piece of art from America's most celebrated ocean
liner. $595.

Silver, Server Used for nearly 40
years, the Manhattan pattern silver made for United States Lines was a
classy design. Here is the shrimp cocktail server, and happily still

Silver, Tray Have you noticed how extremely well made the
International Silver Company items for the United States Lines is?
Here's a small tray in the Manhattan pattern as used on the United States.
According to a former passenger, the only wood on board was "the lead pencil
with which your opulently salaried Steward figures how big your tip should
be." Perhaps it was on this tray! Dated 1952, this tray measures
over 6" in diameter. Very good condition with the typical utensil
marks. No loss of silver plate. Also available is an identical
tray dated 1962. $40 each. |

20392 United States Lines Brochure
Dated October, 1932, this superb brochure has
32 pages with 39 photos of the Manhattan, Leviathan, President Harding, and

unusual compared to the British brochures of the time. One interesting
fact is that, according to the brochure, the Manhattan had the only
air-conditioned dining room at sea. Very good condition with some
bumps on the corners. $85. |
