Cunard & Cunard White Star

China, Silver & Glassware

NEW!

25889    Cunard White Star          China, Demi-Tasse Cup and Saucer

Interestingly, the bone china first used on the Queens had a definite yellow shade to it.  Shortly after the war, Cunard decided to change the color and used a much whiter china.  Setting a pre- and post-war piece side by side makes a great comparison.

Has the date of September, 1948, clearly impressed into the saucer.  Both pieces are in excellent condition.  $125.

NEW!

25238   Cunard White Star           China, Hot Water Jug

The pre-war tea sets used on the Mary and second Mauretania were bottom marked with that very famous "Cube" logo and registration number.  (The cube tea pot was famous both on board ships and off in the 1920's and 1930's.)  Post war, they stopped bothering to mark them as "Cube." Here's your chance to add a pre-war hot water jug to your Cunard White Star china collection.  Made by Grosvenor.  In excellent condition with a slight chip on the inside rim near the spout.  Still displays very well.  Stands 4" tall.  $75.

NEW!

25119   Cunard White Star           China, Creamer

Lovely individual creamer from the tea service of the Queens.  Near mint made by Foley.  Stands 3" tall.  $45.

NEW!

25644    Cunard White Star          China, Tea Cup

As we know, this pattern was introduced with the Queen Mary in 1936.  The date mark of November, 1935, is impressed into the saucer, clearly showing that this set was intended for the Mary because it was used on no other ship in the fleet at the time.  This probably made her maiden voyage with her and may have been taken of by a souvenir hunter!  In very good condition with a stained hairline in the bottom of the cup.  See photo.  Displays beautifully.  $145.

NEW!

25991   Cunard White Star            Sugar Bowl

Fine bone china sugar dish in the pre-war rose pattern as used aboard Aquitania.  Hand-painted and produced by Copelands, this piece measures about 2" across and stands 1½".  In near-mint condition.  A very beautiful pattern!  $45.

SOLD!

21404   Cunard                              Dinner Plate

Made by Mintons and back stamped with a date code for 1904, this fine example of the blue delft pattern measures about 9½” across.  This pattern is popularly thought of as the second-class pattern for Lusitania and Mauretania, but archival photos taken during Lusitania’s first visit to New York show that this pattern was actually used in first class.  A single piece of this pattern was recovered from the wreck of Lusitania in 1982 during the Oceaneering salvage work.

Two variations of this pattern exist.  This example is the rarer of the two where the vines come off the rim and go into the deeper section of the plate.

Very good condition (no cracks or staining) with a nice clear logo.  The tiniest of chips out of the back rim that cannot be seen from the front.  Light crazing and utensil marks.  Top marked pre-WWI Cunard china is getting very hard to find.  $550.

SOLD!

21248   Cunard                              Luncheon Plate

Very fine hand-painted bone china luncheon plate in the "Currents" pattern.  Made by Copeland Spode and dated 1925.  After the war, for nearly all their dinnerware, Cunard switched to back marking their china.    Near-mint condition with very few utensil mark.  No fading, cracking, or crazing.  One flea-bite chip in the back rim that is not visible from the front.  Interestingly, this pattern is rarer and harder to find than any other first-class Cunard pattern from the 20’s.  $150.

SOLD!

21485   Cunard                              Tea Plate

Bone china hand-painted bread plate in the “Bird-of-Paradise” pattern.  Measures just over 6” across.  Not a souvenir item but an in-service piece.  Produced by Tuscan china and bottom marked with the Cunard logo.  Used on the Cunarders in the 1920’s.  In excellent condition.  No chips, cracks, or crazing.  $75.

SOLD!

25671   Cunard White Star            Coffee Cup and Saucer

Unusually rare pattern to find marked Cunard White Star.  This pattern was used in the first-class dining room on Mauretania as well as others.  Made by Booths.  The saucer measures 6" in diameter.  No chips, cracks, or crazing.  There is some wear to the gold on the rim of the cup.  $175.

SOLD!

25096   Cunard White Star             Side Plate

Lovely Greek Key pattern with gold trim as used in the first-class dining room of Mauretania and others.  Very hard to find this pattern marked Cunard White Star.  Some light utensil marks; otherwise, near mint.  This pattern was also used on board the Queens in third class without the gold banding.  Measures 7" in diameter.  $95.

21503    Cunard                              Chamber Pot

Mintons chamber pot in the pattern used in first class at the time of Lusitania.  Bottom marked with the pre-World War I Cunard ribbon logo.  Excellent condition, retaining almost all of its original gold trim.  No chips, cracks, or crazing. Measures about 7½" across and 5" high.  $245.

14634    Cunard White Star            Chamber Pot

It's hard to believe that as late as the 1930's second- and third-class passengers had to go down the hall to use the facilities.  Or they could use one of these!  This example of a Cunard White Star chamber pot measures about 7½" across and 5" high.  Produced by Mintons, this is fully marked with Mintons name (both written and impressed) and the CWS logo on the bottom.  Excellent condition.  Very little wear to the gold trim.  $195.

21243   Cunard                              China, Tea Pot

Foley bone-china tea pot, measuring just about 3¼” square.  Good condition but one of the flanges to hold the lid on is broken.  Tip it carefully!  No cracks, chips, or crazing.  $125.

SOLD!

21399   Cunard                              China, Coffee Cup

An exceptionally rare piece of Foley bone-china from the service of the Queens.  Measures 3½” across the mouth of the cup and stands 2¼” high. In very good condition with some slight scuffing on the saucer.  $135.

SOLD!

25809    Cunard White Star          China, Demi-Tasse Cup and Saucer

Classic all-white demi-tasse cup and saucer made for Cunard White Star by Minton.  Near mint with no chips, cracks, or crazing.  $145.

SOLD!

25418    Cunard White Star          China, Footed Dish

Interesting all-white variation of the rarely seen bone china sherbet dish.  Very unusual in that it is made by Staffordshire.  Stands about 2½" tall.  In mint condition.  See the archival photo at left, taken on the Queen Mary, for an example of this dish in use.  Two available @ $95.

SOLD!

21439   Cunard                              China, Footed Dish

Foley bone-china footed dish.  Measures about 3” across the top and stands about 2” high.  Excellent condition with no cracks, chips, or crazing.  One of the harder Foley pieces to find.  $95.

21445   Cunard                              China, Side Plate

Foley bone-china side plate, measuring 6½” across.  Date mark impressed into the bottom of some.  Very good condition.  A quantity available.  $45

21486   Cunard                              China, Tea Cup

Foley bone-china tea cup and saucer from the post-WWII service of the Queens.  The in-service saucer is dated 1964.  The cup interestingly is a souvenir sold on board in the gift shops.  Not many pieces of souvenir Foley china are seen.  Very good condition. No chips, cracks, or crazing.  $75.

SOLD!

25826   Cunard White Star           China, Sugar Bowl

It seems for a brief time in the post-war period that Cunard White Star continued to have their china supplied by Copelands, but by the late 1940's, they had moved to Foley.  Perhaps a cheaper manufacturer?  This is a rare post-war Copelands piece because of the whiter shade of the china.  Excellent condition.  Measures 2" across.  $40.

NEW!

25891   Cunard White Star           Shell Dish, Large

The ubiquitous shell dish as used on the Queens.  This filled many uses, apparently at the stewards' discretion.  In archival photos, I've seen it used for olives, cashews, and lemon/lime slices.  See archival photo at left.  Measures 5" across.  Made by Foley.  Excellent condition with a small chip out of the back.  $40.

Very rare hors d'oeuvre dish made by Empire.  This were used on the "Barlett" hors d'oeuvre trolleys that the waiters pushed around to each table with a selection of appetizers to tempt you.  The back of this is marked "3," because each dish was placed in a particular order in the trolley.  A few light crazing marks.  The only one of this pattern I have ever seen.  See archival at left for a photo of these types of trays in use in their trolley on the Queen Elizabeth.  $125.

2999     Cunard                              Fruit Bowl, Third Class (ca. 1936-1960s)

A shallow bowl in the pattern used in third-class on the Queens.  A variation of this Greek Key pattern was also used on board the Cunarders of the 1920s except the earlier pieces have gold bands around the edges of the dishes.  Bottom marked with the name of the manufacturer and Cunard.  8” across.  In good overall condition but has a chip out of the rim on the front and some darkened crazing.  Would still display beautifully.  $30.

SOLD!

25890    Cunard White Star       Asparagus Server

Extremely rare asparagus server in the pinewood pattern made by Elkington and dated 1936.  Obviously made for the Mary.  I've seen an inventory of silver on the Queen Mary from 1939 that lists 17 of these on board.  Being a serving piece, these were quite expensive to buy so not many were carried.

Very good condition.  No silver loss.  Some slight bends and dings from years of use.  I have one of these in my personal collection, and here's your chance to add one to yours.  One of the few I know to exist.  A top-notch opportunity for one of you.  $375.

21489   Cunard                          Butter Dish

Made by Elkington and dated 1920, this lovely Cunard iced butter dish is very unusually a Kosher piece.  In very good condition with a few dings to the rim of the insert and the typical use marks.  No plate loss.  Measures 7½” in diameter and about 2” high.  The last time I was on board QE2 for a transatlantic, I was pleased to see that they are still using iced butter dished in the dining room to this day.  $95.

NEW!

25601    Cunard White Star         Butter Dish

Lovely Kosher iced butter dish in the pinewood pattern as used throughout the Cunard fleet.  Both pieces marked with the Hebrew word for "Kosher" and are Cunard White Star.    Measures 5" across.  I've seen examples of iced butter dishes for many transatlantic companies, and these seem to be a first-class table prerequisite.  The black mark seen on the back are stickers that can easily be removed.  Has a dent to the insert and someone has scratched the name "Ben" into the bottom of the bowl, which can't be seen with the insert in place.  Made by Elkington and date marked 1939.  $75.

25997    Cunard White Star         Butter Dish

16130  Cunard                           Chafing Dish

I am proud to offer an item that only very few collectors are ever able to say they own.  A Cunard chafing dish produced by Elkington and dated 1921.  How many of these do we ever see?  Complete with burner and base (Pinewood pattern, no date).  Two arms of the burner support are separated but could easily be fixed with a drop of solder.  One knob of a handle is also missing.  Typical use marks.  An outstanding item.  $350.

SOLD!

25493    Cunard White Star         Champagne Bucket with Stand

There's silver, and then there's silver.  This immense champagne bucket and stand was designed with a heavy base to keep it upright in rough seas.  Together these pieces measure over 18” tall.  The bucket is 8” in diameter at the upper rim and 9½” tall.  The stand is 13” tall.  Both produced by Elkington plate.  In the the pinewood pattern, the bucket and stand are each dated 1936.

You can see in the attached archival image the same type of bucket and stand in use on Queen Mary.

There are two dents in the rim and two dents in the base of the bucket.  Both of these could be fixed by a good silversmith.  The rest is in very good
condition with the usual nicks, dings, and marks from use.  It's a massive thing weighing about 15 pounds.  $3850.

NEW!

25500    Cunard White Star         Champagne Bucket

What do I say about a piece like this?  Stands about 8½" tall and is about 6½" wide.  Made by Elkington and in near-mint condition with an unusual date mark of 1938.  Happily has both its original bottles and stoppers.  See the archival photo for a piece just like this in use.  A few nicks in the stoppers.  Yet another rare opportunity for one of you.  $495.

SOLD!

25612    Cunard White Star         Finger Bowl

In a 1936 article reviewing the new silver service for the Queen Mary, the writer found much to praise with the exception of this one piece.  He found the hammered copper finger bowls to be a distraction from the elegance of the rest of her dining-room service.  Made by Elkington and measures 4" across and stands 2" tall.  Very good condition.  $45.
