Cunard M-Q

SOLD!

33145     Mauretania (1907)                 Ashtray

Superb pre-WWI silver-plated ashtray with Cunard flag enameled in the center.  I have an identical ashtray for White Star in my own collection, and notice that the maker seems to have made one flag (a swallowtail) and used is for whatever company needed souvenirs.  Must have been cheaper that way!  Very good condition with some marks in the bottom of the bowl from cigarettes.  Enameled flag is perfect.  Measures 4½" in diameter.  Definitely dates to the pre-WWI period.  $125.

33006    Mauretania (1907)                 Cigarette Card

Full-color Wills cigarette card for the Mauretania.  This one dates to the pre-WWI period because the back mentions that she will soon be eclipsed by the "White Star liners Olympic and Titanic now building 1911."  Excellent condition with some slight bumping to corners.  $20.

33444    Mauretania (1907)                 Cigarette Card

Post-war cigarette card by Wills from their "Merchant Ships of the World" series, which I believe was done in 1924.  She is still listed as the fastest ship in the world.  Very good condition.  $10.

SOLD!

33225    Mauretania (1907)                 Deck Plan

Superb fold-open color-coded deck plan for her Sea Breeze Vacation Cruises.  Very interesting plan because it shows in detail the upgrades and modifications made to her, including the addition of many private baths.  Lots of unusual details shown like the location of the cabins for the bank staff.  A large, clear interior photo of her verandah cafe and an exterior on the second-class boat deck.

I'm going to evoke my standard line here and say that I love cruise plans for her because you get first and second class in one shot.  In fact, this one also shows some of the better third-class cabins were used on her cruises.  Measures 34" x 33" and is in near-mint condition with just the tiniest of pin holes at some of the folds.  You will not be disappointed with this plan!  Very late because she is in her white phase.  $150.

SOLD!

23198    Mauretania (1907)                 Deck Plan

"Supplementary plan of accommodations" showing her second-class areas.  Measures 28" x 27" and dating to 1931 for her weekend cruises from New York. Some separation at folds.  Includes detailed rate schedule.  $75.

SOLD!

33645    Mauretania (1907)                 Handkerchief

Colorful linen handkerchief produced about the time of her entry into service showing her compared to various monuments to show her great size.  Happily there is no fading and the colors are still vibrant.  To be so old, it's in great shape with just a few frays at the corners.  Measures over 13" x 12".  $125.

13418    Mauretania (1907)                 Magic Lantern Slide

The sitting and dining room of one of the Regal Suites on board the Mauretania.  Unusually, the door leading out of the suite is open, and you can see the corridor beyond.  Missing some of the tape around the edge, but otherwise in excellent condition. $25.

SOLD!

33451  Mauretania (1907)                    Post Card

Real photo card of Mauretania on the ways at Swan Hunter.  She would be launched very shortly as it looks like the viewing platform is under construction just under the bow.  You can just see her name peeking through the scaffolding.  Amazing image!  Unused and in excellent condition.  $85.

13375    Mauretania (1907)                  Post Card

Extremely rare post card for the Mauretania.  The message on the back talks about having beaten all records by 2½ hours.  The card is postmarked September 13, 1909, and the stamp has been removed.  The passage time is written on the front of the card.  Overall in excellent condition.  $35.

SOLD!

33915  Mauretania (1907)                    Post Card

Exceedingly rare real photographic card of Mauretania as a hospital ship.  Painting her as a hospital ship really showed off her fine lines, especially at the stern.  Unused and in excellent condition with just a bumped corner.  $95.

33503  Mauretania (1907)                    Post Card

Famous photographic post card of Mauretania in her diamond-shaped dazzle scheme.  One of several she sported during the war.  Crawling with troops (they're even standing on top of the wireless cabin).  Unused and in excellent condition with one dog-eared corner.  $75.

SOLD!

33184  Mauretania (1907)                    Post Card

This shot is one of the best I have ever seen for Mauretania.  Not only that, it is amazingly clear.  Dates to the early 1920's.  She's a beauty!  Unused and in mint condition.  Need I say that it would scan amazingly well?  $85.

33001  Mauretania (1907)                    Post Card

I've been informed that this specially produced nighttime photo card is a doctored version of a daytime view.  Notice the crescent moon is "backwards."  Posted July 27, 1917, with a family message on the back.  Slight bumping to the edges and the corners.  $35.

SOLD!

33105  Mauretania (1907)                    Post Card

Prior to WWI, Cunard and White Star had different philosophies about how to get passengers to London as fast as possible.  White Star chose the Southampton route (because it also gave them a continental port), but Cunard chose Fishguard as a first UK stop.  This photographic post card shows Mauretania in Fishguard Harbor on one of her earlier visits.  This card is so sharp you can read the names on the tenders.  A slight dog-ear to a corner and a chipped corner.  $45.

SOLD!

33676  Mauretania (1907)                    Post Card

I've always liked these pre-WWI woven-in-silk post cards.  I've only seen the occasional one done after the war.  Unused and in excellent condition with some dirt along the top edge.  $60.

15876R   Mauretania (1907)                  Post Card

Sepia rendering of Mauretania.  Written on and postmarked July 29, 1909.  Fair condition.  $5.

NEW!

33234   Mauretania (1907)                   Woodwork, Cigarette/Match holder

Beautiful Deco styling on this piece made from her pine decking.  Still has its original match striker on the side.  Unfortunately, doesn't come with any smokes.  In fantastic condition.  Stands 2½" tall and is 3½" across.  One of the more uncommon items made from her.  $95.

33896   Mauretania (1907)                   Woodwork

An unusual piece, possibly a pencil holder as so many different items were made for desk sets.  Stands about 3½" tall.  Hand made from her pine decking.  Excellent condition with some scuffs and bumps.  $45.

33567   Mauretania (1907)                   Woodwork, Candlesticks

Wonderful pair of candlesticks made from the teak handrail of the Mauretania.  Standing 8" tall, these are in excellent condition. One candlestick has a plaque from Hughes, Bolckow Shipbreaking Co. in Blyth, Northumberland, attesfting to their origin.  Just imagine gracing your table with the ship that held the Blue Ribband for 22 years!  I have only ever seen 4 pairs of these including the set I own personally.  $275.

SOLD!

33772   Mauretania (1939)                   Book, Shipbuilder

You all know what's in a copy of the Shipbuilder, which is way too much to list.  Runs 112 pages of information and 62 pages of excellent ads for a total of 174 pages.  Lots of photos and information not found elsewhere.  If you want to know anything about the second Mauretania, it's in here, including complete fold-out profiles and deck plans.

Comes with the memorandum dated July 21, 1939, stating that the copy was paid for by Allen West (the company that provided electric starters on board).  This particular copy was sent to V. Breeze.

Some foxing on cover and spine has been taped; otherwise contents excellent.  $250.

33065   Mauretania (1939)                   Deck Plan

Tourist-class fold-out plan dated August, 1958.  In excellent condition.  $20.

SOLD!

33888   Mauretania (1939)                   Deck Plan

Another great full-color Cunard plan from the early 1960's.  Chockablock with some great glossy color photos, several of which are from Caronia, Queen Mary, and Queen Elizabeth, 31 in all!  This is for her Mediterranean service after she was painted green.  "Of the 8,000 men and women aboard Cunard ships, the majority are stewards, stewardesses, and other catering personnel.  They offer an aggregate of over 50,000 years of experience."

For some reason, plans fro her are difficult to come by.  One of the last good ones for this beloved ship.  She didn't have a lot of time left.  Excellent condition.  $50.

26100   Mauretania (1939)                   Passenger List, Maiden Voyage, Post War

Post-war maiden voyage passenger list for the second Mauretania.  First class with Captain Woollatt in command. Very full list.  Very good condition.  $45.

33992    Mauretania (1939)                 Photograph

Original press photo dated March, 31, 1939, or Mauretania being fitted out.  Has a Paris press stamp.  Blurb on back is in French.  Measures 7" x 5".  Very good condition with some waviness because of the glue on the press blurb on the back.  $30.

33522    Mauretania (1939)                 Photograph

Original press photo showing the funnel being taken of the ship during her refit in Liverpool in September, 1946.  They are also taking of the degaussing strip.  Probably the start of her post-war refit.  Measures 9" x 7½".  Very good condition.  $40.

16876    Mauretania (1939)                 Photograph

A sad site.  Mauretania at the breakers yard.  She's flying her paying off pennant and sporting her short-lived green hull.  Very crisp.  Measures 5" x 3¼".  $25.

33859    Mauretania (1939)                 Photograph

13265  Mauretania (1939)                 Photograph

Superb first-generation photo by Stewart Bale of the second-class dining room.  Look at all the White Star silver on the sideboard!  Stewart Bale stamp on back.  Unbelievably clear.  10¾” x 8¾”.  In mint condition.  $32.

33646  Mauretania (1939)                 Souvenir

For those (like myself) trying to rebuild the Cunard onboard gift shop in your home, here is an oddity.  Wooden barrel pen and pencil holder.  Happily comes with both its original floaty Mauretania pencil (the ship has a black hull) and pencil (the ship is in her short-lived green phase).  Excellent condition.  Never seen another.  $75.

33854  Mauretania (1939)                 Tie Bar

From her on-board gift shop comes this enameled tie bar.  Excellent condition.  $40.

First-class, full-color plan, dated December, 1954.  Measures  44" x 9".  Eight color images.  Great "QE" logo inside a trident.  Printed on glossy paper.  This is considered by many to be the best plan done for her.  Get it while you can as I have trouble keeping these in stock.  Very good condition.  $40.

30354    Queen Elizabeth                  Photograph

Original Daily Telegraph photo dating from the 1960's of a Cunard window display.  Note the photo in the background of the QE passing a palm tree in the background.  That's definitely not Southampton Water!  Measures 11½" x 9½".  Excellent condition.  $30.

30045    Queen Elizabeth                  Shoe Horn

28549    Queen Elizabeth 2                   Passenger List

This passenger list comes from an era Cunard was still supplying us with passenger lists.  For her 94-day, 38,000-mile 1983 Circle Pacific and Orient Odyssey.  John Duffy is listed as hotel manager, and he stayed with her until her arrival in Dubai.  Extremely large list measuring 12" x 8".  Excellent condition.  $18.

28777    Queen Elizabeth 2                   Photo

Aerial view of QE2 departing for a cruise to Israel.  The blurb on the back tells us that only 580 passengers were on board, mostly Jews from the U.S.  This cruise was to celebrate Passover and the 25th anniversary of Israel.  12 marine commandos were on board to deal with any terrorism attempts.  Measures 10" x 8".  Very clear.  $20.

SOLD!

28371    Queen Elizabeth 2                   Pin

While in the Queen's Room during the past-passenger cocktail party during QE2's Farewell to Britain cruise, the staff captain came up to me and told me how nice this pin is and asked where I got it because he knew it was from her early years of service.  No damage to enamel. Excellent condition.  Two available @ $65 ea.

28118    Queen Elizabeth 2                   Pin Tray

It's tough to date this QE2 souvenir.  This fine bone china dish made Coalport measures about 5" in diameter and has a fantastic old style Cunard logo in gold.  No loss to gold leaf.  Mint condition.  $25.

Unused reservation card for the Tables of the World Restaurant.  Mint.  $2.

SOLD!

28315    Queen Elizabeth 2                   Turbine Blade

As built, QE2 had Pametrada turbines.  We're all aware of the overheating and breaking of blades on her trial cruise.  To rectify this, strengthening wires were strung between the blades through tubes.  While I'm not a "techie," I suspect that the tube going through this blade is part of that "fix." When she was finally converted from steam to diesel in 1987, her turbines were removed and the blades made into souvenir sculptures by Michael Cox.

This piece of blading stands 4¼" tall.  It comes with it's original box and a certificate of authenticity.  Own a piece of one of the last turbine-driven passenger liners to cross the Atlantic.  $185.

28681    Queen Elizabeth 2                   Turbine Blade

What a conversation piece!  This large piece of turbine blading stands 6½" tall and shows the end where the blade attached to the rotor.  Very unusual.  Comes with a certificate of authenticity.  In the gift shop on board QE2, there was an entire turbine blade mounted on a wooden stand.  The price was $1,500!  This can be yours for $225.
