22543 Nieuw Amsterdam/Rotterdam Brochure, Pre-World War I “Two Giants of the Atlantic.” Beautiful brochure for the pre-war Rotterdam and Nieuw Amsterdam. Embossed cover. 32 pages with 26 pictures. Covers first and second classes. Dates to between 1908 and 1914. Anything pre-war for Holland America is extremely hard to find, let alone a brochure of this caliber. What is intriguing about this brochure is that it shows how well appointed these pre world war one HAL ships were. These ships were not the largest or fastest ships on the Atlantic, but this brochure proves that they were certainly among the most luxurious. Each page has a single photo and a complete description of the room depicted. An amazing selection of interior photos, including the Japanese Tea Room on the Nieuw Amsterdam and "an electric passenger elevator of the most approved construction" on board the Rotterdam. Large full-page ad for the Statendam (later Justicia and later still, her Britannic connection) “now in the course of construction.” Tied with a green cord. Measures about 9” x 6”. Some fraying to the edges of the cover and some dirt. Otherwise in excellent condition. $195. |
|
35112 Nieuw Amsterdam (1938)
Brochure Huge brochure for the Nieuw Amsterdam covering the art on board, which was simply amazing. I've rarely seen for any ship, including Normandie, a more lavish brochure. 46 pages with far too many illustrations to list, a large number in full color, with 5 double-page fold-outs! Tied with a fancy cord. Text is in Dutch and dates to her pre-war years. Excellent condition. In a word: Wow! $195. |

35781 Willem Ruys
Brochure She was beautiful! Laid down in 1938 and named after the grandson of the founder of Rotterdam Lloyd, the Willem Ruys made her maiden voyage in 1947, and in 1964, she was sold to Flotta Lauro and became the Achille Lauro. On November 30, 1994, she caught fire and sank off the coast of Somalia. This spectacular entry-into-service brochure covers all three classes, running 26 pages with 44 photos. Great centerfold cut-away with 57 items on the key. According to the brochure, every single cabin was an outside with a porthole and some of her first-class staterooms were air conditioned, which was almost unheard of in 1947. This is the best you can get for her! Absolutely mint! It looks like it just came of the travel agent's shelf. $195. |

Good old Elkington, so easy to date and so well made! When I was in London in 2003, I saw a set of silver-plated tigers at the Victoria and Albert Museum. They were life sized, dated 1888, and produced to demonstrate what Elkington was capable of. Amazing pieces. |

35999 Orania / Flandria Brochure (Royal Holland Lloyd, Koninklijke Hollandsche Lloyd) This full-color entry-into-service brochure is the best you can get for these two Dutch liners. Built in 1922, the interiors have a definite pre-war look to them but are stunning nonetheless. I am very impressed by the amenities on board considering they went to South America in the 1920's! After many years of service, the Orania was rammed and sunk in 1934 by the Loanda, and the Flandria was sold in 1936 to CGT and renamed Bretagne. She was torpedoed and sunk in 1939. 28 pages with 16 images and almost all are full-color interior and exterior renderings, most full page. Text in French. Fantastic condition with just a touch of foxing on the cover. Very tough to find anything for these liners! $225. |
| SOLD! |
39012 Orania / Flandria
Brochure (Royal Holland Lloyd, Koninklijke Hollandsche Lloyd) Full-color 24 page brochure that covers first and second class on the Orania and Flandria. These two liners have a pre-World War I look to them. Both ships were eventually sunk, one after being rammed by another ship, and the other was torpedoed in 1939. Text in English. Mint condition. $175. |
