Matson Line

NEW!

43855       Lurline       Deck Plan

Stupendous color-coded glossy deck plan for Lurline's 1934 South Seas & Oriental Cruise.  Prime time for this beloved liner.  7 very large glossy images of her interiors, including two in rarely seen full color.  Very interesting to compare her interiors with her re-worked postwar interiors.  Measures about 40" by 44".  A few separations at the folds which do not detract.  $175.

NEW!

43777       Lurline       Deck Plan

Excellent deck plan for the beloved Lurline.  Dated December, 1956, which was the height of her post-war popularity and before the impact of jets began to be felt on the Hawaii run.  11 shots of the ship and life on board.  Opens to just over 23" x 9".  In excellent condition.  $20.

NEW!

43209       Lurline / Matsonia       Deck Plan

Glossy full-color deck plan for the Lurline and Matsonia.  Dates to the very brief period both ships operated together in the late 1950's.  Filled with color photos of every type of cabin and life on board.  When open, measures over 23" x 9".  In near mint condition.  $25.

NEW!

43558       Malolo        Brochure

"From East to West through Panama...."  Pre-maiden voyage foldout brochure for the new Malolo from 1927, advertising her first voyage from New York to Honolulu, which took 5 weeks.  7 renderings of her and her interiors as well as the cruise fares.  Measures about 16" x 12".  In very good condition with some writing and the pervious owners name on the cover.  $40.

NEW!

43915       Malolo        Brochure

Here it is a show stopper for your Matson collection.  The very best brochure produced for the famous Malolo.  She marked a new epoch in American ship building and was designed by the famous William Francis Gibbs, who was fresh off his Leviathan reconstruction and headed for even more glory in WWII and, of course, eventually the ss United States.  This is the entry-into-service brochure produced by Matson in 1927.  "Glide swiftly, steadily Aloha-ward."  30 pages with nearly one photo to every page.  And what photos they are!  Fascinating views -- coffee in the smoking room, the telephone switch board, the gymnasium, her fantastic indoor swimming pool, etc., etc.  Near mint.  $295.

SOLD!

43676       Malolo        Brochure

Superb brochure produced "On the occasion of the launching of the s.s. Malolo, June 26, 1926."  The merger with American-Hawaiian Steamship Co. was in such early stages that both companies are mentioned throughout the brochure.  Also mentioned as building "in a historic coconut grove where Hawaii's kings played games of strength and skill" is the now famous Royal Hawaiian Hotel on Waikiki beach.  Brochure contains 10 renderings of her interiors and one of her under construction.  Some foxing on the front cover and title page.  Otherwise near mint.  $225.

SOLD!

43002       Malolo        Brochure

Almost in a tie for the nicest brochure ever produced for Malolo, this one runs 32 pages features 30 photos.  All sorts of rooms are shown including the barber shop and her soda fountain, which looks like a bar but remember there was no booze on board in 1926 on American liners.  Superbly produced and from her earliest days in service.  Malolo, which is Hawaiian for "flying fish," was a name that was not very popular in the islands, it being considered unlucky.  Her name was changed to Matsonia in 1937 to address this.  She had a long life, and because all American ships of the interwar years were so well built, they were highly prized on the secondary market.  She was sent to the scrappers in 1977, 50 years after entering service!  Near mint condition.  $250.

SOLD!

43112       Malolo        Deck Plan

Huge color-coded, glossy deck plan for the Malolo.  Five fantastic, large, clear images of her "innards."  In very good condition with a few small tears at some of the folds and some roughness to the upper left corner.  Opens to 37" x 33".  $175.

NEW!

43900       Malolo        Brochure

"Malolo, Third Around the Pacific Cruise."  Brochure for this three-month-long cruise, which ran from September 19 to December 16, 1931.  Great itinerary!  24 pages, including complete price list.  Mostly shots of the ports, but the last few pages show the various cabin layouts which are quite interesting.  In very good condition.  $75.

SOLD!

43574       Matsonia          Magazine about Refit

The May-June issue of the the Newport News Shipyard Bulletin.  34 pages with 33 photos of the rebuilt Matsonia, including two in color.  Several shots showing spaces both pre-restoration (still in wartime grey and/or gutted) and post restoration.  Also shown is some of Hawaiian artwork.  Her new interiors are very mid-century in style.  She is like a warmer ss United States.  You might say she was a cross between the ss United States and the Andrea Doria.  In excellent condition.  $50.

SOLD!

43789            Matson            Ashtray

Ashtray as used onboard the Lurline, Mariposa, Monterey.  Comes with a mint condition set of matches which is unused and complete with all its matches.  Happily the match book dates from the same period (1960's) as the ashtray and even advertises the same ships.  Measures just over 3" square.  $30.

SOLD!

43123           Matson            Brochure

"The Matson Line A-B-C Book of Ocean Travel."  Cute booklet from December, 1925, that uses every letter in the alphabet to describe life and services on board.  Also advertised as coming in 1927 is the Malolo.  In mint condition and a quaint look at travel concerns of American's in the 1920's.  $45.

NEW!

43662         Matson           Crystal

Matson tableware is quite tough to come by.  This wine glass is thus all the more desirable.  Note an identical glass in use in the archival view from the 1950's.  Measuring about 4½" tall and in excellent condition.  $30.

SOLD!

43360          Matson            Silver

Unusual piece of table service - a syrup pitcher made by the good folks at International Silver.  Stands about 4½" tall and is about 5" across at the base.  Nice pieces of silver like this aren't usually seen.  In good condition, but there are a lot of use marks and touches of plate loss here and there.  When I found this piece, it was as black as coal so it came back pretty well.  $85.

N.Y.K.

30098   Asama Maru                          Bell

One of N.Y.K.'s most famous ships, the Asama Maru was one of the finest liners to be built by this company.  She entered service in 1929, and this sand-cast bell was given to passengers on the ship's maiden voyage.  Like so many other N.Y.K. ships, the Asama Maru was sunk by a US submarine on November 1, 1944, in the China Sea.

According to the original paperwork provided with the bell, it is a model of the ship's bell as well as the bells pilgrims wore on their belts when ascending Mt. Fuji to visit the Asama Shrine after which the ship is named.  Paperwork is in English, Chinese, and Japanese.  Original box also present, but missing its lid.  Has a sticker stating: "This bell takes a polish with a soft cloth."  I'll leave that to you.  Bell is in excellent condition and stands just over 2" tall.  $95.

NEW!

42960   Atsuta Maru                         Post Card

The Atsuta Maru was built in 1909 and sailed on NYK's Japan to Europe service via the Mediterranean.  In 1938 she was renamed Atuta Maru and was used as a troop transport during WWII.  She was torpedoed and sunk east of Okinawa on May 30, 1942, by the USS Pompano.  An all-too-familiar fate for the entire NYK fleet.

This superb photo card of her in Hong Kong is unused and in mint condition.  We see almost nothing for the pre-World War I NYK liners.  $45.

NEW!

42697   Kaiyei Maru                         Post Card

Unusual card of the Kaiyei Maru on the stocks.  Built in 1918, it seems that she was sold in 1920 to the Dutch and renamed Jagersfontein.  After a number of additional incarnations, she was scrapped in the UK in 1953.  Unused and in great condition.  I doubt I will ever have anything else for this liner she is so rare in this phase of her life.  Some bumped corners.  $35.

NEW!

42885   Nagasaki Maru / Shanghai Maru                    Post Card Set

A set of six color interior postcards for the Nagasaki Maru and the Shanghai Maru.  How often do you see interior color views for pre-World War II NYK ships?  All are unused and in excellent condition.  $165 for the set.

NEW!

42176   Taiyo Maru                            Post Card Set

A set of six real photo post cards for the Taiyo Maru -- five interior and one exterior.  The thing for which she is best known is that she undertook an intelligence-gathering voyage in October, 1941, and carefully plotted a 3,100-mile course across the northern Pacific in preparation for the attack on Pearl Harbor, just two months later, all the while carrying Americans back to the States.  She was torpedoed and sunk on May 8, 1942, off the coast of Japan by the submarine Grenadier.  She looks very top heavy to me.  Her superstructure is massive.

All the cards are unused and in excellent condition.  $125 for the set.

NEW!

42446   Tenyo Maru                            Post Card

One of three sister ships, she was built in 1908 for the Hong Kong to San Francisco service.  She was scrapped in 1933.  Great condition.  Very early photo card for a very early NYK liner.  Corners slightly discolored from where attached to album.  Otherwise very good.  $35.

NEW!

42419   N.Y.K.                                    Brochure

Fantastic tourist class brochure for the "Seattle-Orient Service" dated April 1931.  The ships covered are M.S. Hikawa Maru, S.S. Hiye Maru, M.S. Heian Maru, S.S. Shidzuoka Maru, and S.S. Yokohama Maru.  Runs 16 pages and sports 11 photos all full page.  The double page center fold is Hiye Maru.  In excellent condition (with one loose staple) with a nice textured cover.  Quite rare as all these ships were lost during the war.  $75.

SOLD!

42893   N.Y.K.                                    China

I wish I were an expert on NYK china.  A search on the internet doesn't provide much information at all about the china used by this proud company.  Do any of my customers know when and where this pattern was used?  There is no maker's mark on the back.  This bowl measures about 8" across.  In excellent condition with  no cracks or crazing but has the tiniest of chips in the rim.  $45.

SOLD!

42997   N.Y.K.                                    China

As with every other piece of NYK china I have had on the site, I know very little about this piece or the time frame in which it was used.  Made in Japan by Sango China, this plate measures a bit over 7½" in diameter.  Condition is very good with no cracks or crazing just a touch of wear to the logo and a tiny chip out of the rim on the back that is not visible from the front.  $45.

NEW!

42724   N.Y.K.                                    Post Card

Fantastic photo card of an unnamed NYK liner sailing from Yokohama.  I am sure one of you can identify her for us.  The rails are lined with people.  This was good old days when streamers were allowed!  Unused and in great condition.  Some corner bumps.  $35.

SOLD!

22122   N.Y.K.                                    Post Card

Wonderful rendering of the Verandah Café on board an "N.Y.K. Orient-California Liner."  Unused.  Near-mint condition.  $24.

39589   Oronsay                                   Photo

Oronsay in her "corn" colored Orient Line hull colors.  A great shot showing her lack of masts and "Welsh Bonnet" funnel.  All very modern for her 1951 debut.  Excellent condition.  Measures 8" x 10".  $25.

SOLD!

39477   Orsova                                    Brochure

Boasting 16 pages with 14 images, this brochure covers first class for this 1954 beauty.  Did you know she exceeded 26 knots on her trials?  In excellent condition with some writing on the cover and one stain inside.  $40.

39035   Orsova                                    Pin Tray

Souvenir pin tray from the on-board gift shop of the Orsova.  Excellent condition.  $20.

39191   Orient Line                             Ashtray

Sought-after Orient Line on-board ashtray as used fleet wide in the 1950's.  The archival at left shows one in use on board the Orsova.  In excellent condition.  $35.

SOLD!

39057   Orient Line                             China Bowl

Restaurant-grade china soup bowl from the Orient Line.  Likely dates to the 1960's.  In excellent condition.  $25.

P&O

39552   Carthage                                  Photo

Super-clear photo of this very early P&O ship from the 19th century.  Some slight tears to the bottom edge that does not detract or go very far into the photo.  Would scan amazingly well.  Measures about 8½" x 11".  $40.

39922   Cathay/Comorin/Chitral                                  Photo

These famous P&O liners were built in the mid-1920's.  Oddly they came into service with old-style quadruple expansion engines.  As P&O soon discovered, they did not live up to their requirements and were too slow for the Australian run for which they were designed to give P&O a fortnightly service.  Low-pressure exhaust turbines were added in 1930 to the Comorin and Chitral.  For some reason, Cathay missed out on this upgrade.  These ships must be some of the last reciprocating engine turbine combinations to sail the seas.  Cathay sank during the war in 1942 when an ammunition explosion blew off her stern.  Comorin caught fire in the North Atlantic in 1941 and was shelled and sunk by the destroyer HMS Lincoln because the fire could not be brought under control.  Chitral was scrapped in 1953.

This press photo of one of their smoking rooms shows a classic liner style, i.e., mock hunting lodge.  In excellent condition measuring 9¼" x 11½".  $30.

39028   Himalaya (Pre-WWI)              Menu

Beautiful embossed cover on this Christmas menu from 1907.  Slight dirt on the cover.  P&O's Latin motto "Quis Separabit" means "Who Will Separate Us?"  P&O still  use the very cool rising sun logo to this day.  I saw it on the Oriana just one week ago.  $15.

32007   Iberia                                        Seating Plan, Post-Launch Luncheon

A seating plan for the guests at the post-launch luncheon of P&O’s Iberia on January 21, 1954.  The inside of the plan shows the arrangement of the tables and lists every guest in attendance as well as the seat they occupied.  Some pencil marks on the back next to a few names.  An outstanding opportunity if you like the Iberia!  $25.

39699   Ranpura                                    Christmas Card

Quite a rarity, an official P&O Christmas card.  Interestingly, both the "from" and "to" fields have pre-printed names.  Probably produced in the on- board print shop?  In excellent condition.  Dates to the 1920's.  $15.

SOLD!

39352   Strathmore                                 Brochure

A real stunner for Strathmore -- her entry-into-service brochure.  Billed as P&O's "happy event," a stork is dropping the brand new Strathmore into service.  Running 24 pages with 23 mostly full-page photos, the highlight being the full color centerfold of the ship.  Most likely the best brochure ever produced for this liner.  Tied with a cord.  In good condition with some staining on the back cover.  $65.

39008   Strathnaver                              Passenger List

A passenger list for a UK round-trip Mediterranean cruise on June 8, 1935 on board the Strathnaver.  R. Harrison is in command.  In excellent condition and includes a table seating card for the forward dining room.  $15.

39062   Viceroy of India                      Photo

Viceroy of India was a one off ship designed for P&O's Bombay service.  She entered service in 1929.  This is her spacious chart room.  Is that contraption in the back of the room an early gyro compass?  Measures about 11" x 7".  $30.

39528   Viceroy of India                      Photo

Such splendor in second class.  Note the full running water sink and real punkah louver ventilation.  Very advanced for 1929.  Still, I suspect her passengers appreciated these comforts on the long hot voyage to India.  Fantastic Stewart Bale photo measuring about 9" x 11".  In excellent condition, crisp and clear.  $25.

39890   P&O                                        China, Creamer

This china pattern was brought into use on the "Straths" of the early 1930's.  It's a lovely restaurant-grade china made by Ashworth Brothers.  In very good condition with no chips or cracks; however, it has a small stain on one side.  Measures about 3¼" tall.  $25.

39857   P&O                                        China, Coffee Cup and Saucer

Super coffee cup and saucer in the pattern used on board the Strathnaver, Strathaird, Strathmore, Strathallan and Stratheden in the 1930's.  This durable and pleasingly simple pattern was used by the company for many years.  These are in excellent condition.  A small quantity available.  $55.

39499   P&O                                        China, Serving Plate

What is this?  Does anyone out there know?  It is like a cake server but it is also like a bowl.  If anyone out there knows please let me know as I am very curious how this lovely footed serving dish was used.  It measures just over 9½" and is in excellent condition aside from one chip and some crazing in the bowl.  $40.

39005   P&O                                        China

I think I have to start this description with another question  What is this?  I don't think it is an ashtray, and I doubt it would be durable or even large enough to be a wine coaster.  Any thoughts?  It measures about 4¾" across and has some slight crazing and a chip in the inner rim.  $25.
