43425   Bremen (1929)                      Brochure

NDL hit their stride again with the Bremen, and this brochure is one of the best for this famed record breaker.  18 pages with 29 interior and exterior photos.  Lots I've never seen before.  Great cover showing the state of the art sea plane used to get mail off the ship as she approached NYC.  Very cutting edge for 1930.  Brochure is tied with a fancy cord.  In excellent condition but has a little wear around the edges.  $225.

23778   Bremen (1929)                      Deck Plan

An early tissue plan for tourist and third class dating to June, 1930.  Measures 59" x 18".  Some passenger notes written in pencil, otherwise, very good condition.  $65.

43444  Bremen (1929)                      Post Card

Real unpublished photo of the Bremen under construction.  This is a private photo that has been made into a post card.  Unused and mint.  $45.

43008   Bremen (1929)                        Post Card

Here's a view one doesn't see very often.  Fantastic photo post card of the Bremen in drydock.  Excellent condition and unused.  $45.

43675   Bremen (1929)                      Post Card

Privately printed real-photo card of the Bremen at dock.  Deckle edged and in near mint condition.  $35.

NEW!

43898   Bremen (1929)                      Post Cards

Set of 8 post cards of the Bremen in their original sleeve.  All are unused and in mint condition.  The location of each image is in German on the back of each card.  Probably sold on board.  The one I like best is the bridge photo.  Cards measure about 6" x 4½".  A selection of the cards is shown.  $75.

35902   Bremen (1929)                        Post Card

Super stern view of the Bremen.  Real photo.  Take a look at the clarity of the image.  Great foam in the water in the foreground.  I wish an artist could paint this scene in color for us.  Excellent condition and unused.  $25.

I have a large selection of menus from the Bremen and Europa.  If there is a particular date or cover you want, let me know, and I'll see if I have it.

35919    Bremen (1957)                     Bell, souvenir

Souvenir brass bell from the Bremen of 1957.  In great condition.  Very loud clear ring.  Use it to summon your staff!  $40.

SOLD!

17398    Bremen (1957)                     Book

Sixty-eight-page book about the former French liner Pasteur.  In English and German.  10 illustrations.  Mint condition.  $30.

35950    Bremen (1957) & Europa (1965)                     Brochure

Great full-color brochure for the ex-Pasteur (bought by NDL in 1959 and renamed Bremen) and the ex-Gripsholm (bought by NDL in 1965 and renamed Europa).  The brochure dates to between 1965 and 1970, when the old rivals HAPAG and NDL merged, and runs 22 pages with lots of photos.  If I were pressed I would say the brochure is 1965 and not later due to the entry into service that year of Europa.  They were proud to have a pair of ships running aging with those names.  Mint condition.  $50.

35710    Bremen (1957)             Cup and Saucer, Souvenir

Lots of gold on this souvenir demi-tasse cup and saucer from the on-board gift shop of the ex-Pasteur.  Probably dates to the 1960's.  Made in Germany with a hand-painted image of the Bremen inside the cup.  In excellent condition with no loss of gold.  $45.

NEW!

43100    Bremen (1957)             Deck Plan

First and tourist-class deck plan for the Bremen (ex-Pasteur).  Nine images.  When open, measures about 36" x 8".  Excellent condition.  $25.

NEW!

43799    Bremen (1957)             Deck Plan

Large fold-out deck plan for the Bremen.  All decks are shown from Sun Deck to G Deck. After being bought by NDL in 1957, she underwent several additional incarnations and sank on her way to the breakers in 1980.  Excellent condition.  $25.

35206    Bremen (1957)             Stein, Souvenir

When I think of a German beer stein, this is the look that pops into my head.  Steins like this were and probably still are a "required" purchase for anyone who visits Germany. Stands about 9" tall and 5" from handle to front.  From the on-board gift shop of the Bremen.  In excellent condition.    Oktoberfest anyone?  $75.

SOLD!

35600    Bremen (1957)             Stein, Souvenir

Souvenir stein as sold in the on-board gift shop.  Marked "Made in West Germany" on the base.  Holds half a liter and stands about 5½" tall and is 5" from handle to front.  In excellent condition with no chips or cracks.  $50.

SOLD!

35001   Columbus                      Brochure

Very rare 48-page brochure for first and second class.  Text in German.  Far too many photos to list (there are 42 of them!), but some highlights are the bridge, a boiler room, the radio cabin on one of her lifeboats, the main staircase, bathroom of a suite, the gymnasium, a corner of the second-class dining room, to name only a few.  Many of these images are full page.  One of the best brochures ever done for her.  Some fading to cover but inside is perfect. Tied with a cord.  Not something you are likely to run across elsewhere.  $265.

SOLD!

43691   Columbus                      Deck Plan

Huge, rare fold-open deck plan for Columbus's Raymond Whitcomb Round South America cruise of 1937.  Happier days for the liner because she was scuttled by her crew early during WWII to avoid capture by the British.  Printed on glossy paper, the deck plan is color coded and has a complete schedule of rates for the cruise.  When open measures about 42" x 32".  Some very small pin holes where the paper is folded, but otherwise in excellent condition.  $165.

35870   Columbus                      Photos

Three fantastic snapshots of Columbus.  She really looked sleek compared with her sister Homeric.  The extra deck that was never added gave Columbus a low profile.  Measures over 4" x 3".  These would scan extremely well.  $50 for the set.

35234   Columbus                      Post Card

Real photo postcard of Columbus's first class lounge.   Interesting to compare it with Homeric's.  Excellent condition and unused.  $15.

NEW!

43410   Europa (1930)               Ashtray

Impressive and much-sought-after bakelite on-board ashtray from NDL's sleek liner Europa, sister of the Bremen.  Has an image of Europa and the Bull in the bottom, which is very similar to a statue found on board.  In excellent condition.  $60.

NEW!

43654   Europa (1930)               Brochure / Commemorating Her 100th Crossing

Super eight-page brochure produced to commemorate the Europa's 100th round trip on August 3, 1935.  By that time Europa had sailed "four times the distance from the earth to the moon...."  Contains an interesting portrait of Jacob Gould Schurman (who launched the liner) that hung on Europa.  One wonders when the Nazis forced NDL to take it down.  Schurman had been the American ambassador to Germany in the 1920's.  Excellent condition with some photos.  $65.

35492   Europa (1930)               Christmas Card

Unusual Christmas card for the Europa, dating from the 1930's.  Used with a personal note written inside.  Otherwise mint.  Not a commonly seen item!  $40.

NEW!

43866   Europa (1930)               Christmas Program for Crew

Rarely seen Christmas program for the crew festivities held on board the Europa in New York on December 24 and 25, 1932.  Contains the complete program for the two days.  In excellent condition.  Never seen another!  $45.

29355   Europa (1930)               Deck Plan

A third-class plan measuring 48" x 18" and dated September 1, 1930, from her entry into service.  In very good condition with a slight tear at one of the folds.  One of NDL's most famous ships!  She lead a very interesting long life becoming the Liberte.  $75.

SOLD!

43367   Europa (1930)               Menu

An extensive à la carte luncheon menu for the Europa dated Saturday, December 19, 1931.  In English and German.  NDL sure knew how to do great art for their menu covers!  This one features a night-time portrait of one of the sisters fully lit.  Would be lovely framed.  Has some bending to one corner.  $25.

SOLD!

43193   Europa (1930)               Menu

Dated August 28, 1934, this à la carte lunch menu has a great painting of the Europa passing another NDL liner.  Note the crowds of people the artist has lining the rails.  NDL would have been thrilled during the depression to have their ships so full!  Very good condition with a slight tear at the spine and bit of something on the back cover.  $25.

NEW!

43081   Europa (1930)               Menu

Evocative cover art....  An "Abschieds-Essen" (or Farewell Dinner) menu dated September 14, 1934.  Nowadays you get a fake leather booklet made in China and a poorly printed menu dictated by the head office swapped out daily.  Don't let the corporate cost cutting get you down, though.  Going on a Cunard crossing is still the only way to go to Europe.  Who wants to be packed into coach for hours on end with no sleep?  In the meantime, go back to the good old days with this menu from one of Germany's finest liners.  Excellent condition.  $25.

I have a large selection of menus from the Bremen and Europa.  If there is a particular date or cover you want, let me know, and I'll see if I have it.
NEW!

43920   Europa (1930)               Post Card

Real-photo card of the Europa belatedly leaving the builder's yard after her disastrous fire during fitting out.  Unused and in near-mint condition.  $45.

NEW!

43020   Europa (1930)               Post Card

Unusual aerial view of the new Europa at dock in Hamburg.  Oversize card that measures about 6" x 4".  Unused and with statistics of the liner on the back.  $45.

NEW!

43115   Europa (1930)               Post Card

Great photo card of the Europa sailing probably from Hamburg.  Oversize card that measures about 5¾" x 4".  Written on in old German script and posted in, what looks like, 1931.  She still has her squat original funnels.  Statistics of the liner on the back.  $30.

NEW!

43333   Europa (1930)               Post Cards

Amazing complete set of 15 interior (with one exterior) real-photo cards of the Europa.  Set is still in its original over.  Cards measure about 4" x 3" and are exceptionally clear.  They would scan amazingly well.  Comes with the original list of cards included in the set.  All are mint.  Only a selection of the cards are shown.  $85.

NEW!

43557   Europa (1930)               Post Cards

Great set of six real-photo interior cards for the German greyhound Europa.  The interiors of the Europa and her sister Bremen are certainly different from what was being produced in France and the UK at the time.  I think I like it!  All are unused and in great condition.  These would scan amazingly well.  $60.

35432   Europa (1930)               Post Card

Powerful real photo postcard of Europa in dock.  Impressive!  Unused and in excellent condition.  $25.

35981   Europa (1930)               Post Card

Superb postcard of Europa racing past a light house.  One of my favorite ocean-liner advertising images.  The ship looks like she is about to leap out of the water!  Excellent condition.  $8.

SOLD!

43737   Europa (1930)               Wine List

Fantastic graphic wine list from the Europa.  I wish I could show you how superbly the cover to this list is embossed.  This is one of the most extensive lists I have ever seen.  Runs a full 42 pages.  It is so extensive, in fact, that it has its own table of contents!  Quite large too at over 11" x 8".  Date on the inside 8/1934.  Excellent.  $65.

NEW!

43808   Europa (1965)               Deck Plan

Cruise plan for the Europa (ex-Kungsholm).  This was her second incarnation.  After sailing for NDL for about 16 years, she became the Columbus C and sank in Cadiz, Spain, after hitting the breakwater in 1984.

Plan measures about 37" x 8" when open.  Very good condition.  $20.

NEW!

43101    Europa (1965)                       Souvenir Plate

Souvenir plate from the Europa (ex-Swedish American liner Kungsholm).  In very good condition with no chips, cracks, or crazing.  Plate measures about 7½" in diameter.  $40.

SOLD!

35441   Kaiser Wilhelm II                 Brochure

The best brochure I have ever seen for this rare German liner, which was the third of NDL's four stackers and which held the Blue Ribbon for a short time.  Judging by the text, this is probably an entry-into-service brochure.  NDL was obviously very proud.

Every single image is covered by a piece of tissue paper that explains what we see in the photo, and each photo is a full page.  Brochure measures over 7" x 5" and runs 36 pages (including those tissue pages with text) and has 16 photos.  This brochure is simply amazing!  Slightly faded cover but otherwise near mint.  Tied with a cord.  $325.

SOLD!

35972   Kaiser Wilhelm II                 Passenger List

This list is from her first year of service and is from her November 3, 1903, Bremen to New York crossing.  First and second class.  Very full list with lots of servants on board!  Complete list of officers and a sailing schedule.  In excellent condition with great cover art.  The back shows the ship in full color at sea.  Fantastic.  $50.

SOLD!

43561   Peer Gynt                             Brochure

What an interesting life this ship had.  Built in 1913 by Vulkan's in Bremen for NDL, she was originally named Sierra Salvada.  Commandeered by the Brazilians in 1917, she was bought back by the Germans in 1923.  At this point she was renamed Peer Gynt.  Eventually, she ended up in the KDF fleet as the Oceana, their smallest and oldest ship at only 9,000 tons.  After the war she was turned over the British and then the Russians.

This fascinating brochure is for liner we see nothing for at all.  Most of the brochure is about the ports she visited during her cruise to India from October 18 to December 18, 1925.  Several pages have interior photos, however.  The bonus is the tissue foldout deck plan in the back of the brochure.  Some water staining on cover and slight damage to the spine.   Also some tears to where the deck plan attaches to the spine which does not detract from the plan or go anywhere into the ships layout  $95.

35718   Prinzessin Victoria Luise      Information for Passengers

Information card for passengers on a cruise to Cuba in 1904.  This one is for Santiago and has points of interest, restaurants, cab fares, excursion rates, etc., listed.  Excellent condition and measures 4½" x 3".  Edges are gold leafed.  A great item from the earliest days of cruising for pleasure.  $25.

NEW!

43030   Norddeutscher Lloyd            Ashtray

Wonderful silver ashtray as used on board the Bremen and Europa.  Made by Koch & Bergfeld, Marked on the base "1928."  See the archival of one in use on the Bremen.  Measures 5¼" in diameter $50.

SOLD!

43573   Norddeutscher Lloyd            Ashtray & Matches

Unusual pressed metal ashtray from NDL.  In good condition with just a small ding here and there.  Comes with a book of NDL matches from the 1930's, complete with wooden matches still inside.  Ashtray measures a little over 7" in diameter.  $50.

NEW!

43930   Norddeutscher Lloyd            Ashtray

The post WWII resumption of passenger service was major even in the history of NDL.  Long delayed by the war and allied restrictions, the Germans did not get back into transatlantic liner service until 1955.  This pin dish dates from that era and was sold in the onpboard gift shops.  Measures about 3½" square and in excellent condition.  $25.

SOLD!

43211   Norddeutscher Lloyd            Brochure for Bremen, Europa, and Columbus

Stunning brochure covering NDL's Bremen, Europa, and Columbus.  Printed in February, 1932, which was the height of NDL's post-war surge.  Bremen and Europa were the fastest and most-modern ships in the world, but not for long, as Italia's Rex was building as this brochure was being printed.  Runs 20 pages and sports 18 mostly full-page photos.  Here is the best part -- this brochure is as near to mint as can be.  Only the slightest scuffing to the edges and corners; otherwise, it looks like just came off the rack in the travel agency.

NEW!

43165   Norddeutscher Lloyd            Brochure for Bremen, Europa, and Columbus

Those precise Germans seem to have thoughtfully dated nearly all of their paperwork, which is handy for us today.  This one is dated June 30, 1934, and sports 17 images on 14 glossy pages so will scan magnificently.  They had interesting interiors that reflect Germany of the late 1920's. Very clean and with touches of art deco creeping in.  Near mint.  $95.

NEW!

43686   Norddeutscher Lloyd            Brochure for Bremen, Europa, and Columbus

"Comfort begins with Lloyd Service...."  Super brochure for second-class on these well-known German liners.  Printed in July of 1930.  Runs 14 pages and includes 22 mostly full-page images on glossy paper.  Not too much is seen for the lower classes on these three liners.  $85.

34510   Norddeutscher Lloyd            China, Cup and Saucer

Maroon-colored bone-china demitasse cup and saucer.  Excellent condition.  An exquisite piece.  Grab it while you can.  These fly off the shelves.  $175.

35059   Norddeutscher Lloyd            China, Cup and Saucer

Fantastic demi-tasse cup and saucer in a very high-quality bone china.  From the pattern as used on the Bremen in the 1930's, happily all the cups are actually marked with the date of manufacture as 1938.  Don't you just love it when the china is thoughtfully dated for us collectors?  Mint condition.  $185.

35740   Norddeutscher Lloyd            China, Egg Cup

Every ocean-liner company had to have egg cups, and they are quite collectible these days.  These examples from the Bremen are no exception.  Stands about 2" tall and in perfect condition.  Dates to the 1930's.  $125.

35275   Norddeutscher Lloyd            China, Sauce Dish

Dating from the 1930's, this pattern was probably used on the Bremen.  Measures over 4" x 7" and stands 2" tall.  Like most good German china, it was made in Bavaria in this case by Bauscher Weiden.  Excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or crazing.  $65.

SOLD!

43111   Norddeutscher Lloyd           Silver Serving Platter

Silver two-sectioned serving platter from the service of the NDL fleet.  In excellent condition with no plate loss and only the smallest of use marks.  Measures about 12" x 8" with fantastic and clear NDL logo.  $65.

16734   Norddeutscher Lloyd           Silverware

Lovely fish knife and fork.  Elegant decoration and good clear logos.  Dates to the 1920's-1930's.  Some wear to handles.  Fork measures 7", the knife is 8½".  The pair $30.

NEW!

43036   Norddeutscher Lloyd           Soap

An unused bar of NDL soap.  Where else can you find something like this?  In very good condition considering its age with some slight discoloration.  $15.
