Swedish American Line

34800   Drottningholm                     Photograph

Deckled-edge snapshot of the former Allan liner Virginian.  The Swedish American Line must have been very satisfied with the service given by her because she was in their service for about 31 years.  Excellent condition.  $18.

34111   Drottningholm                     Post Card

Great photo card of the old Virginian of the Allan Line.  This first turbine-driven liner was bought by Swedish American in 1920 and renamed Drottningholm.  In 1951, she was acquired by Home Lines, and this beauty was finally scrapped in 1955.  Extremely clear.  Unused and in mint condition.  $25.

34080   Drottningholm                     Post Card

You don't see many interior cards for Swedish American liners, let alone one that was built in 1905 as the Virginian!  Here's a shot of her dining room.  Unused and mint.  $12.

34877    Drottningholm                    Post Card

Fantastic real-photo view of the first-class smoking room.  Unused and mint.  $12.

34043   Gripsholm                          Deck Plan

Deck plan for series of 1973-1974 West Indies cruises.  Color photos with a deck plan on the inside.  Folds open to 24" x 18".  Excellent condition.  $25.

34347   Gripsholm                         Deck Plan

Plain paper deck plan for this Swedish beauty.  Measures about 17" x 11".  Mint.  $18.

33822   Gripsholm/Kungsholm                     Deck Plan

Great deck plan for the Gripsholm and Kungsholm.  Dating from the 1960s and in excellent condition.  Always tough to find good stuff from Swedish American Line.  $20.

SOLD!

34104   Kungsholm                        Brochure

It does not get much better than this for Swedish American Line!  Superb entry-into-service brochure for the 1966 Kungsholm.  Kungsolm was one of the last large liners built for the transatlantic run finishing up for SAL when they went under in 1975.  She was built by the ailing John Brown shipyard in Scotland.  She is still tenuously hanging on with us today as the Mona Lisa although she does not meet SOLAS standards going into effect this fall.  I suspect she will not be sailing much longer.  Mostly artist renderings in the brochure as the ship was so new.  A great set of fold-out deck plans inside.  $135.

34689   Kungsholm                        Deck Plan

Deck plan for the Kungsholm.  Measures 17" x 11" and in mint condition.  $18.

34678   Kungsholm/Gripsholm           Deck Plan

Very nice tissue plan with the Kungsholm on one side and the Gripsholm on the other.  In mint condition.  Measures about 24" x 18".  $20.

34677   Stockholm                         Photograph

Very rare snapshot of the first Stockholm at New York.  Originally built as the Potsdam for Holland America, she was acquired by Swedish American in 1915 and renamed Stockholm.  In 1929, she was sold to Norwegian interests and was scuttled by German troops in 1944 to block the entrance to Cherbourg harbor.  She was finally raised and broken up in 1947.  Excellent condition.  $25.

34326   Stockholm                         Post Card

Early color-rendering card for the first ship named Stockholm.  She was the beginning of the Swedish American Line in 1915.   Unused and in excellent condition.  I wonder who the artist was....  $12.

34832   Stockholm                         Post Card

Color-rendering post card of a painting by Fred Hoertz, who did lots of work for the steamship lines from the 1920's to the 1950's.  Boy, was he prolific!  Unused and in excellent condition.  $12.

34982   Stockholm                         Photograph

A great snapshot of Stockholm taken on a fine day in 1953 as stated on the back.  Excellent condition.  $20.

34499   Stockholm                         Photograph

The Stockholm has lovely lines.  Amazingly, she is still sailing today although has been thoroughly rebuilt.  $20.

34319   Stockholm                         Photograph

Taken in 1953, the photographer has captured her knife like bow, and we all know what she used it for!  $20.

34005   Stockholm                         Photograph

Unusual snapshot of the Stockholm taken in 1953.  The photographer has inventively turned the camera to fit the entire ship into the frame.  Producing almost a diamond look to the photo when the ship is "properly" turned.  $20.

34706   Stockholm                         Photograph

"The bow of the Swedish-American Liner Stockholm looks like it had been run through a giant meat grinder...."  So says the press blurb still attached to the back of this amazing Associated Press photo of the Stockholm docked in New York.  In excellent condition.  Measures 9" x 7".  $50

34300   Stockholm                         Photograph

One of the most unusual photos I've seen of the Stockholm after her collision with the Doria.  Taken from inside her shattered bow, this United Press "telephoto" measures 9" x 7" and is in excellent condition.  $50

16772   Stockholm                         Post Card

Hard-to-find post card of the Stockholm in the first of her many reincarnations.  This one as the East German Völkerfreundschaft.  In good condition with missing stamp.  $18.

34200   Swedish American                  Baggage Sticker

3" square baggage sticker.  In mint condition.  $5.

34968   Swedish American                  Baggage Sticker

Baggage sticker for a Swedish American Line cruise.  Not sure where it went, but I'd love to go!  Measures about 5" x 4".  Mint condition.  $10.

34533   Swedish American                  Baggage Tag

Baggage tag with a broadside of one of the Swedish beauties.  They were amazing ships!  Mint condition.  $10.

34472   Swedish American                 Ashtray

These ashtrays used to turn up often.  The supply, however, seems to have dried up.  What happened?  In perfect condition.  $15.

34058   Swedish American                 Pocket Knife

Beautiful pocket knife with an image of the Gripsholm or Kungsholm.  There is a nail file, two blades, and something that I don't know what it was used for!  No rust and in excellent condition.  Probably dates to the 1960's.  Made in Sweden!  One never sees souvenirs for this line.  $40.

34779   Swedish American                 Sugar shaker

Rarely do you see high quality silver items from the tables of Swedish American Line.  This sugar shaker is a fantastic example of the on board silver service most likely from the era of Kungsholm & Gripsholm.  Mint condition.  Made by Gense.  $95.

Union Castle

SOLD!

34797    Edinburgh Castle                    Deck Plan

34810    Galway Castle                         Postcard

Stunning photo postcard of the sinking of the Galway Castle.  She was built at Harland & Wolff in 1911 as hull 419.  She was torpedoed on September 12, 1918 by the German submarine U82.  She broke her back but amazingly did not sink for three more days!  She was Union Castle's last wartime loss.  A snapshot of history.  $40.

34258    Oranje                                     Deck Plan

Measuring about 24" x 22", this color-coded deck plan for the Oranje is dated 1970 and is in mint condition.  Both first and tourist class -- one class to a side.  Union Castle sure liked hot pink in their decoration!  A note on the back states that she "meets International Safety Standards for new ships developed in 1948 but does not meet the 1966 Fire Safety requirements."  $35.

SOLD!

34007    Pendennis Castle                    Brochure

Entry-into-service brochure for the Pendennis Castle.  Built by Harland & Wolff, she made her maiden voyage in January, 1959, which is the date of this brochure.  Lots of full-color renderings and a cutaway.  Runs 12 pages and is in mint condition other than a small hole on the back cover.  $75.

34593    Pendennis Castle                    Deck Plan

Color-coded plan.  First class one side, tourist class on the other.  Printed on glossy paper, and measures about 24" x 21".

SOLD!

34066    Windsor Castle                       Deck Plan

Launched by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, the Windsor Castle survived in various forms until finally scrapped in India in 2005.  This deck plan is for first and tourist, one class to a side.  Lots of color.  The saturated primary colors used in her decor almost hurts my eyes!  Very good condition with a bumped top edge.  $35.

SOLD!

34778    Union Castle                           Brochure

Superb full-color first-class brochure for Union Castle.  To my mind, the Union Castle ships have always been under-appreciated but were absolute beauties!  This brochure runs 16 pages and has too many fantastic, rare color photos to mention.  Dates to the mid-1950's.  It has always been very difficult to find anything really good for Union Castle.  It just doesn't turn up.  Happily this is one of the best post war brochures produced.  Perfect condition other than a 3" long separation at the spine.  $95.

34117    Union Castle                           China

First-class side plate measuring 6½" across and backmarked with the line name.  Made by Royal Doulton.  See archival at left for image of the china in use on board the Edinburgh Castle.  Excellent condition.  $40.

34432    Union Castle                           Fares and Sailing Schedule

Dated January, 1959, this booklet gives rates and schedules for all of Union Castle's services.  Great condition.  $15.

34998    Union Castle                           Sugar Shaker

Silver sugar shaker, which stands 5½" tall and is in excellent condition with a bit of wear to the logo.  Bottom marked Mappin & Webb and dated 1958.  (Thanks, Malcolm!)  Perhaps from the Pendennis Castle.  $50.
