20260 United States
Deck Chair With Francis Gibbs's desire to build a
fire-proof ship, the massive teak deck chairs of an earlier era were
dispensed with and in their place appeared these iconic red nylon-webbed
aluminum deck chairs, which emphasized the new liner's high-tech,
fireproof, and light-weight construction practices.
Many of the deck chairs
one sees from the United States have either badly faded webbing or cracked/broken arm rests
-- or both. These chairs, however, are in very good condition with
only some slight pocking of the
aluminum (could probably be polished out) and some very, very slight fraying
to the nylon webbing at some edges. Two of the webs on one of the deck chairs
were replaced many years ago when the ship was in service and are of a
brighter red.
I acquired these two deck chairs for my
personal collection about ten years ago and have finally decided to part
with them. Two available @ $750 each.

Silver, Tray Have you noticed how extremely well made the
International Silver Company items for the United States Lines is?
Here's a small tray in the Manhattan pattern as used on the United States.
According to a former passenger, the only wood on board was "the lead pencil
with which your opulently salaried Steward figures how big your tip should
be." Perhaps it was on this tray! Dated 1964, this tray measures
over 6" in diameter. Very good condition with the typical utensil
marks. No loss of silver plate. $40. |

32806 Washington Medal
June 11, 1940. What a trying day for
those on board the Washington. The ship was on a rescue mission,
having been ordered by the Department of State to pick up American refugees
and take them to Galway, Ireland. Just before dawn, the liner was stopped by
a German U-boat and was told that they had ten minutes to get everyone in
the boats before being torpedoed. A flurry of signals was sent by the
Washington and for ten harrowing minutes, as all the woman and children were
loaded into the boats, the signal lamp operator flashed "American ship,
Washington, American ship, Washington" desperately trying to get the Germans
to understand that she was a neutral ship. Eventually the submarine
realized its mistake and allowed the Washington to depart. As a
precaution, the Washington's captain Harry Manning (later captain of the
United States) left all the woman and children in the boats until he was
sure they were safely out of range.
After the incident, the board of directors of
the United States Lines commissioned a medal for every crewman in honor of
their "efficiency in meeting an emergency." This well-made bronze
medal is one of them and was given to Otto Voight. The medal and
casting is of a much higher quality than the typical medals given out on
board for various awards. No mention of the incident is made in the
United States Lines annual report for 1940. Perhaps censorship due to
the war?
In excellent condition. I doubt you'll
see another! $95.

32457 United States Lines
Brochure, Cargo Service
"Popular trips on cargo ships." Fold-out brochure for the
cargo/passenger services of the United States Lines. Has deck plans
for each class of ship and full general information, including the cost to
ship a car. The C-2 ships had a dining room that doubled as a lounge
and only four cabins, two of which were singles for males only. The Mariner
ships were slightly nicer and had a lounge and a dining room. Dates to post-1964 but pre-1969.
I understand that passengers being carried on cargo ships is now a declining
trend. Excellent condition. $25. |
