32346     America                    Passenger List

If you ever wondered where the America was during the maiden voyage of the United States, now you know!  She left Bremerhaven on June 30 and then departed Southampton on July 2 so she must have passed the United States at some point during the crossing to New York.  Wouldn't you like to see a photo of that passing?

Captain Anderson in command.  Excellent condition with some slight dirt on cover.  $35.

SOLD!

32296     America (Australis)                    Brochure

I wish the United States Lines had done a brochure like this for her when she was the America, but since Chandris didn't change her much, all these color glossy photo are like a time warp!  The only real difference I can see are the Chandris blankets added to the cabins.  22 pages filled with full-color photos, including some of the best exteriors I have ever seen.  Complete with deck plans.  Each cabin category (from the suites on down to the six-berth cabins) is accompanied by a color photo and a layout plan.  Absolutely mint and measures about 11½" x 8½".  $85.

28711   Leviathan                               Brochure

Beautiful 32-page brochure devoted exclusively to the Leviathan.  27 photos with mostly amazing full-page interior views.  Mostly first class, there are a few views in second class.  Some of the more unusual photos include the breakfast room of one of the "Premier" suites, the Tea Room, a corner of the Winter Garden, the second-class lobby, and many more.  Fleet list at the back.  The liner's name is taken straight from the Bible as suggested by President Wilson.  One of the comprehensive brochures you'll ever see for her.  Great United States Lines logo on the back cover.  Arguably the best brochure ever done for her.  Near mint.  $95.

28377   Leviathan                               Brochure

Nice smaller brochure.  32 pages with 13 photos, not including two pages of many pictures of famous passengers.  Many unusual views such as a corner of the library.  All first class.  Haven't seen this one before.  Near mint.  $65.

20446   Leviathan                               Deck Plan

Deck plan for second class aboard Leviathan.  When opened, it measures 37" x 22".  Great logos. Color coded, would look great framed.  Dated April, 1929.  Some separation at the folds otherwise excellent.  $85.

32956   Leviathan                               Passenger List

First-class passenger list dated August 28, 1931, from Southampton to New York.  Captain A.M. Moore in command.  Good condition.  $25.

28504   Leviathan                                Photo

Outstanding, very clear 8" x 10" photo of Leviathan which was taken when she entered the only dry dock in the United States large enough to hold her.  Thoughtfully noted at the bottom "Boston, January 22, 1929."  Attached to an album page and has some tearing in the lower right corner which does not affect the ship image.  Powerful photo!  $45.

SOLD!

32902   United States                         Cut-Away

Great color cut-away of the United States.  Reverse has many interior views and a blurb and chart showing daily speeds and distances of her record-breaking maiden voyage.  These frame fantastically.  Opens to 32" x 9".  Excellent condition.  $30.

20260     United States                          Deck Chair

With Francis Gibbs's desire to build a fire-proof ship, the massive teak deck chairs of an earlier era were dispensed with and in their place appeared these iconic red nylon-webbed aluminum deck chairs, which emphasized the new liner's high-tech, fireproof, and light-weight construction practices.

Many of the deck chairs one sees from the United States have either badly faded webbing or cracked/broken arm rests -- or both.  These chairs, however, are in very good condition with only some slight pocking of the aluminum (could probably be polished out) and some very, very slight fraying to the nylon webbing at some edges.  Two of the webs on one of the deck chairs were replaced many years ago when the ship was in service and are of a brighter red.

I acquired these two deck chairs for my personal collection about ten years ago and have finally decided to part with them.  Two available @ $750 each.

SOLD!

32402  United States                            Deck Plan, First Class

"Come on in.  The water's fine!"  Excellent color-coded first-class plan for the United States.  There are so many cabins on Upper Deck and the deck is so long, that the plan has a fold-out!  Mint condition.  When the page for Upper Deck is unfolded, it measures about 40".  Lots of color interiors on every page.  Printed on glossy paper.  These are the best plans I've seen for her.  $35.

32890  United States                            Deck Plan, Cabin Class

Great color-coded plan for cabin class (second).  Lots of  colorful interior images.  She had surprisingly spacious cabins in second class.  Seems most cabins have showers at the least.  Combined with full air-conditioning, this equals full luxury in second class.  Measures over 23" when unfolded.  Mint condition.  $30.

32464  United States                            Deck Plan, Tourist Class

Rarely seen plan for the third-class accommodations on board the United States.  Printed on glossy paper, this plan shows the added Writing Room and Library which were taken from first class around 1960 to increase the number of third-class public rooms.  In looking at the plan, I realized that none of her third-class cabins had bathrooms, only sinks.  Mint condition.  $30.

32005     United States                     Lapel Pen

Cabin-class passenger list for the June 21, 1963, crossing.  The passenger has marked a few cabin numbers beside their friends' names.  Also comes with an unused tournament entry form with boxes to check if you want to participate in the ping pong, shuffleboard, quoits, etc., tournaments.  $12.

26801     United States                        Silver, Tray

Have you noticed how extremely well made the International Silver Company items for the United States Lines is?   Here's a small tray in the Manhattan pattern as used on the United States.  According to a former passenger, the only wood on board was "the lead pencil with which your opulently salaried Steward figures how big your tip should be."  Perhaps it was on this tray!  Dated 1964, this tray measures over 6" in diameter.  Very good condition with the typical utensil marks.  No loss of silver plate.  $40.

13432     United States                        Table Cloth

29702      Washington                         Deck Plan

Extremely large deck plan on heavy paper.  When opened, it measures 59" x 38" and covers all three classes.  Tears at the folds, but these would not be noticeable if the plan were framed.  Undated but marked "preliminary" so presumably before her entry into service.  Impressive!  $65.

32806         Washington                           Medal

June 11, 1940.  What a trying day for those on board the Washington.  The ship was on a rescue mission, having been ordered by the Department of State to pick up American refugees and take them to Galway, Ireland. Just before dawn, the liner was stopped by a German U-boat and was told that they had ten minutes to get everyone in the boats before being torpedoed.  A flurry of signals was sent by the Washington and for ten harrowing minutes, as all the woman and children were loaded into the boats, the signal lamp operator flashed "American ship, Washington, American ship, Washington" desperately trying to get the Germans to understand that she was a neutral ship.  Eventually the submarine realized its mistake and allowed the Washington to depart.  As a precaution, the Washington's captain Harry Manning (later captain of the United States) left all the woman and children in the boats until he was sure they were safely out of range.

After the incident, the board of directors of the United States Lines commissioned a medal for every crewman in honor of their "efficiency in meeting an emergency."  This well-made bronze medal is one of them and was given to Otto Voight.  The medal and casting is of a much higher quality than the typical medals given out on board for various awards.  No mention of the incident is made in the United States Lines annual report for 1940.  Perhaps censorship due to the war?

In excellent condition.  I doubt you'll see another!  $95.

32457   United States Lines               Brochure, Cargo Service

"Popular trips on cargo ships."  Fold-out brochure for the cargo/passenger services of the United States Lines.  Has deck plans for each class of ship and full general information, including the cost to ship a car.  The C-2 ships had a dining room that doubled as a lounge and only four cabins, two of which were singles for males only.  The Mariner ships were slightly nicer and had a lounge and a dining room.  Dates to post-1964 but pre-1969.  I understand that passengers being carried on cargo ships is now a declining trend.  Excellent condition.  $25.

SOLD!
